Decide whether you need a Hawaii clearance or a case filing

The public history check is conviction-focused

The Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center issues Hawaii adult criminal-conviction checks, also called police clearances or abstracts. Arrests with pending outcomes or non-convictions are not available to the general public through this product. A clear public-history response therefore does not establish that there is no pending court case.

Choose the name-based clearance format the recipient accepts

The HCJDC name-check instructions distinguish online results from checks processed by its office. Confirm acceptance of an online printout before paying.

HCJDC route Published charge or requirement Delivery distinction
eCrim online $5 per name search plus $12 for each resulting certified record. The report is emailed after payment.
Public access location $25 per printout/search. Contact the chosen location for its office hours.
CHRC office or mail $30 service fee; certification adds $20; notarization adds no fee. Use HCJDC-073. Office-processed checks have the embossed department seal. The stated processing range is 3–5 business days, or 7–10 with notarization.

The office does not accept cash. Its listed electronic payment methods carry a 3% service fee; money orders and cashier’s checks are also accepted. Mail requests use a money order or cashier’s check payable to State of Hawaii. These are Hawaii checks, not national searches.

Check an older case number’s format

The judiciary’s access guide explains how to add circuit, case type and leading zeros to very old migrated IDs. Other migrated IDs require the full identifier without hyphens. Use its examples before concluding the case is absent.

    Look for a PDF icon

No icon means the document is not available online. Confidential cases and sealed documents are excluded; contact the appropriate courthouse about a hard-copy request or permissible access.

Avoid buying access already available to a party

The judiciary directs parties to register for JEFS to access available documents in their own cases without charge, rather than purchase a subscription. It states that eCourt Kōkua payments are non-refundable.
